Daemon Lord of Tzeentch

This coming weekend I will get to use my Daemon Lord of Tzeentch for the second time in the 2.5 years I’ve had it.  The first time was an apocalypse game and it was primers white.

When I last posted anything, I had put a simple base coat on the model when IA13 was released and made it unplayable in any games but apocalypse.

actinic lights anyone?

Quick and dirty Plaguebearers

I found a “lost post” from just before my shoulder surgery back in April, 2015.  I needed some plague bearers just in case I needed to summon them in a game.  I’ll post a full tutorial when I work on the next batch of plague bearers, this is just a quick how-to.  I have some older metal models that I need to paint as well.

Knights! (my road to the Las Vegas Open)

Knights6

Having fallen in love with an amazing paint scheme concept- that of a blue hot-rod with orange/yellow flames, I’ve spent the last year or so trying to make it a reality.  I’ve finally found my canvas, and it coincides nicely with my desire to take a competitive, but beautiful army to the Las Vegas Open in February 2016.  My immediate goal is to have everything basecoated and based for the Know No Mercy Grand Tournament in October, but the ultimate target is the LVO, and perhaps beyond.

Tzeentch Daemon Lord WIP

I find that I really enjoy painting larger models. They tend to be both a bit more forgiving technically and easier to work on. Once I “finished” the bloodthirster, I decided to take up a project that had been sitting on my shelf since Christmas of 2013.  I’ve already brought the wings into the same color sequence as the body, but forgot to take a picture.

Hobby Work Bench Update – Feb 2, 2015

IMG_0517.JPGThe last 2 weeks has been busy.  I’ve been working on my Space Wolves for LVO, helping Darklink with an Eldar army that we’re giving away at my upcoming tournament, and helping another friend try out a color scheme for his Dark Eldar army.  Add in the upcoming Harlequin release, moving our club into our new game room, work, and family, and there hasn’t been much time for getting in games.

Being a 49ers fan, I casually watched the big game today.  This allowed me to finish assembling my Whirlwind Scorpius, finish kitbashing my Rune Priest on bike and lay down some color on a Wraithknight and five Wraithguard.  Pictures follow in no particular order.

Custom Wolf Priest on Bike (part 1)

IMG_0468.JPG

I’m working on my Space Wolves army for 2015.  A bit of a New Year’s resolution to stay focused on one army until I complete 2500 points.  I’m playing in a 6 event escalation tournament this year that starts at 1250 and works its way up by 250 point increments.  It does not allow Forge World, so I’ll end up going over 2500 points as I’m also taking Space Wolves to the Las Vegas Open in February.

In a recent game, I decided that I wanted to try out a Wolf Priest on bike with a large Thunderwolf Cavalry “death star.”  There are some tradeoffs to be had, but this article is about the modeling and painting and not the tactics.  So, without further ado, this is what I did over the weekend.

Rocky Mountain Bases (part 1)

I really like custom resin bases.  Well, actually I really like nice custom bases.  It’s just that resin bases have a whole bunch of issues.  First, most sets of resin bases only have a few different designs, they tend to be short and the bottoms are flat, so they don’t sit on uneven surfaces well.  So, I decided to make my own bases.  I started with regular 65mm Citadel bases.

Painting a Skull Icon

My current army has a paint scheme inspired by Erin Morgenstern’s, ‘The Night Circus’.  It’s a wonderful novel in the fantasy genre with some of the best imagery that I have ever had the pleasure of reading.   For anyone who hasn’t heard of ‘The Night Circus’, the style for the army is very close to a Frank Miller graphic novel, like ‘Sin City’.  The style is monochromatic with just a few hints of red.

My Airbrush Setup

I get questions regularly on what hardware I use in my airbrush setup.  Below I’ll show you what I use and some alternatives if you want to save a few bucks.  I’m linking to various vendors; however, I don’t get any payment for these items, so buy where you’re most convenient.

Neo

Air Brush – I have two, and I like the cheaper one better

  • Iwata HP-C Plus – this was my first brush.  It is better made than my Neo; however, I use the Neo day in and out for the reasons I will explain below.
  • Iwata Neo CN – I bought this brush locally on sale for about $40.  You can get it on Amazon for under $55, and close to $40 at Dick Blick right now..  This is a great brush that will take you from beginner to experienced intermediate and perhaps beyond.
