Anything goes in 40K games at Warhammer World?

m3390045a_WHW_events_hall_2013_749x300

The Warrior’s Code is a document maintained by the staff at Warhammer World, Games Workshop’s own massive gaming facility at their headquarters in Nottingham, England.  This is seen as one standard on which other players base what is “legal” in their games in so much as it drives list building for many people in the UK who travel to Warhammer World for major events such as the Throne of Skulls.

The latest version, 1.4, released today, now includes these additions to legal army lists for Warhammer 40K:

  • A Warhammer 40,000 Codex and/or Codex Supplement
  • The Escalation, Death from the Skies and Stronghold Assault publications
  • A Forge World publication (including digital updates)
  • Forge World Experimental Rules
  • Dataslates
  • The “Horus Heresy” publications will only be in use where the Event Pack specifically says so.

Update: What does this mean for you local gaming meta?  Maybe nothing, but it continues to trend towards allowing everything and the kitchen sink into 40K games.  Food for thought.

Rumor: Changes coming to White Dwarf (again)

Updated at 11:15am

Today we have a rumor that White Dwarf as we have known it for a little over a year is now history.  It is rumored to be replaced with a monthly hobby magazine and a weekly advertising product.  I subscribed to WD Digital exactly one year ago and have enjoyed the electronic delivery, but have been disappointed by the long-term value of the article content.  I miss the old White Dwarfs that included more regular and in-depth hobby articles.  Content on painting, kit-bashing, terrain building and sample rule sets offer long-term value.  Advertising content for the next month’s release sits on the shelf.

So, if this rumor is true then I ‘m hopeful that this may swing the pendulum back towards good hobby content.  However, no word on how existing subscriptions will translate into one or both of the new products.  I, for one, am glad my subscription doesn’t renew until mid February.  I’m waiting with judgement reserved.

Natfka reports some details here:

And, if you can read German, you can get a little more detail here:

An introduction of a new and expanded White Dwarf team with a few new faces might support this rumor.  Perhaps the staff is gearing up to produce more content:

Update: From Natfka:

White Dwarf Visions (New White Dwarf), is coming soon, February 1st, and there will be new issues every Saturday.  The prices are as follows, and will only be sold at GW Stores and Independents…. no newstands.

Whats being revealed is that the magazine will be 32 pages of whats new and exciting in the hobby this week, new releases and other news. There will also be new features that will include hobby oriented material, like techniques for painting and modeling, and new rules, and new authors.

First 6E Apocalypse Game

I try to play in at least one Warhammer 40K Apocalypse game each year, although I think I missed 2012.  Olde World Gaming hosted a 40,000 point game this past weekend pitting the forces of Order (plus some daemons and Dark Eldar) against the forces of Awesome (Chaos/daemons/traitor guard, Tyranids and some Tau).

I like the rulebook; I picked up the iPad edition.  It’s pretty easy to get through it when needed.  The game was fun, and while our team won, the final score of 79 to 74 was essentially a tie.  We got in 3 rounds in just under 7 hours and using the Exterminatus table helped clean up the game just before the 3rd round.  Good fun had by all.

Here are some pictures of the board as we were getting started.

Twin-Linked GT Armies on Parade (part 2)

Here are the rest of the pictures that Keith took as promised last night.  I really wish I had taken pictures because there we so many armies that were very nice looking.  Out of 60 armies, 20 were selected by the judges for final scoring.  I would say that there were probably 30 armies (or half the field) that could have made the final cut – Keith’s Tau included.  Not having played at GTs outside the local area I’m not sure if this is normal, but we have a ton of excellent artists that make their way to Great Escape Games for large events.

Twin-Linked Armies on Parade (part 1)

I failed as a blogger and took essentially no pictures from the TLGT this past weekend.  Luckily my partner Keith snapped a few pictures, which I’ve included below and will add the rest in part 2 tomorrow.  Sorry for some of the depth of focus, I suppose I can’t complain since I didn’t take any shots.  As I mentioned before there was a ton of Tau, and here are some of the better Tau armies as well as a nasty Space Marine army.

The Twin Linked Grand Tournament

TLGTA bit of a detour from painting and modelling, but my other love is competitive Warhammer 40K.  I’m lucky enough to have both a small local store where I run 40K leagues once or twice a year and also within about a 20 minute drive from a very large store, Great Escape Games, who hosts two amazing events in alternating months, so you can play in a tournament every month of the year.  Those two events are the Contest of Champions, an escalation tournament that takes place on 6 Saturdays throughout the year, the first 3 round event starts at 1250 points in January and every 2 months another 3 round tournament takes place at 250 point increments.  I’ve played in these events for the past 2 year now.

Heroquest, 25 years later

HQAs a kid I played Heroquest with friends.  I think it was the gateway drug to miniature games for me.  For those of you who are either too young to remember or have been living under a rock for the past 25 years, Heroquest was a partnership between Games Workshop and Milton Bradley.  The game was designed to be run by one player as the Dungeon Master against one or more players/heros.  The plastic models are still decent by today’s standards and the game play, while simple, is still a great gateway game for younger players.  My eight year old daughter loves the game and the skill level works nicely.

Fast forward to today, Gamezone, a company in Spain is producing a 25th anniversary edition.  You can join the action on Kickstarter:

Editorial – Two Month Anniversary

Today marks two months of operations here at the League of Underwhelming Miniature Painters.  I hope we’re able to continue for many more months and years.  I want to reflect briefly on what we’ve done in the past two months and where we’re headed.  First, if you’re reading this, thank you for taking a few minutes to read our articles.  I hope you get something out of them because without an audience we’re not accomplishing much.  Second, we would appreciate any feedback you have.  If there is something you want to see more of, or just see, please let us know and we’ll do what we can to bring you new content.

New Rumor – Tzeentch 40K Supplement incoming – December 2013

First off, this is MY rumor, based upon nothing other than wild speculation and while I’m probably wrong, it would be awesome if I’m right.  I know nothing about what could be in such a book, but this is what I think SHOULD be in a proper Tzeentch supplement.

Restrictions:

  • All units must be marked or daemons of Tzeentch (or CSM vehicle units that cannot be marked).

Benefits:

  • Daemonic instability rule is relaxed to allow cross joining of ICs and units between codices.

If we got NOTHING else, this would be freaking awesome!
